After 3 years only 400 of them stayed, for huge plots of free land. Promised aristocracy if they stay in new france, lots of whom came from peasant backgrounds, so this was a good way to entice them to stay. Bourgeoisie: merchant class who traded within the city. Moving to canada was seem as a good way to start over, as you could change the class that you were in.
