White and aboriginal societies in the mid 1800"s. Lord durham was an aristocrat and a reformer, wrote a report to give back to the king in. Broke up the wealthy families that were pretty much controlling both upper canada and. Responsible government governor -> executive council -> legislative council. White males who own all the property were in control of the government. Durham didn"t want any french canadians to have any control in the government in. Durham also thought that the rebellion was english vs french, not people trying to oppose the government. Wanted the legislator to be dominated by english speakers. Upper canada and lower canada became canada east and canada west. English government didn"t like the idea of a responsible government, so originally their answer for a change was no. New assembly after 1838 was ruled by reformer (the grits) also became the liberal party later on in the future.
