The weimar republic is not just about the rise of hitler. Worth examining in its own right, not just as a lead up to the third reich. Autumn, 1918: the end of the great war: german final military offensives failed, mutinies by german sailor, demonstrations in berlin and munich, calls for revolution. The november revolution: 9th of november 1918: kaiser wilhelm ii abdicated, germany declared a republic (head of government = friedrich ebert) Very different looking leader : november 11th, 1918 germany signed the armistice to end the war, army. Generals wouldn"t sign it, made a civilian lawyer (matthais erzberger) to sign it on germany"s behalf. The stab in the back" legend: germany didn"t really loose the war . Jews, pacifists, feminists, defeatists, profiteers, civilians, socialists, etc. Communist uprising led by rosa luxemburg and karl liebknecht (a. k. a. 5-12 january 1919- newspaper offices occupied barricades erected. 6th january 1919 manifesto: berlin in chaos, the army and the freikorps (free corps)
