A: it is less energy ef cient to digest lactose (involves production of beta galactosidase in order to break down the lactose) Since bacteria strive to out-replicate their neighbours, it is important to have ef cient fast energy sources. Also called cyclic amp receptor protein (crp) reason for different names: Both cap and crp were discovered carrying out different cellular processes in different environments which led people to believe they were different genes but they later discovered they were both parts of the same pathway. Many can be found in e coli. Mechanism: cap/crp binds to dna/rnap at the cap binding site as a dimer, effectively recruits rnap.
