Both males and females have it, but the additional testosterone in males stimulates growth of male genitalia during fetal period, and controls the secondary sex characteristics during puberty. Nonhuman female mammals, estrogen levels peak during ovulation, controlling sexual receptivity. Puberty triggers development of sex characteristics and sexual interest. Menopause is the cause of estrogen levels falling. For some, surgery or drugs may cause hormonal shifts. Often involves sexual motivation, especially sexual motivation and arousal. Sometimes involves paraphilia(unusual sexual desires) --> person experiences distress from unusual sexual interest or entails harm or risk of harm to others. 14-19 year old u. s females found 39. 5% had stis. Condom use effectiveness( 80% effective with infected partner). Accounts for 90% of spinal- injured men can feel sexual desire.
