(doctor, lawyer, engineer) In other countries working in youth is associated w/ family being poor & have more effective apprenticeship programs. Jobs have found to be: monotonous, unchallenging, stressful, little contact w/adults and few opportunities to develop responsibility or use school based skills. Nonworkers who become employed achieve lower grades, have lower future educational expectations, spend less time on homework & express more disengagement from school. Moderate workers who left workforce perform better in school after stopping work. Extensive work exacerbates the problem of being less engaged in school. If there is a maintenance of school grades w/ working then most often it is due to taking easier classes and increase of cheating. Increase of drug use often occurs during rst year of working part time.
