Culture - issues in adolescence (schlegel & barry) Adolescence exists across cultures but not in the same form and not in the same duration/shorter in pre-industrialized societies and shorter in girls. Cultural constrasts: pre-industrialized society: spend time in the home working alongside adults of the same sex and they are contributors to a larger system of social organization. Lives are fully integrated into those of the family & community. Rarely see characteristics of uncertainty, self-doubt, and stress: na: clear extremes between the role demands of children and adults. Ex. children are to be submissive and adults are to be assertive and controlling. Chinese spend more time overall in academic activities (school + homework) Japanese + chinese more likely to succeed in math.
