Develop trust in caregiver, sense of autonomy, initiative and industry, then personal exploration of the self. Engagement in all 3 leads to identity synthesis. Identity is concerned w/ the sameness and difference at the level of social categorization, group af liation, and intergroup relations as well as at the level of individual consciousness or subjectivity. It includes properties of sameness and distinction that link the interior world of psychological experience and the exterior world of language and categorization. The self becomes presented to the exterior world through identity; through social practice (vygotsky) Continuity of the transition: ex. are the roles/status of adulthood assumed slowly w/ a great deal of preparation, ex. is the period of transition for today"s young more discontinuous. Canadians teens place supreme importance on values such as honesty/caring for others.
