Addressing the stereotype of eastern europe as the land of prejudices and ethnic violence (borat). Begins much like borat, but then takes us on a more serious journey through the landscape of historical memory, trauma and identity construction. The story of a young american jew traveling to ukraine in search for a woman who, as he thinks, had saved his grandfather during the holocaust. Yet the character of jonathan remains undeveloped; he is too uptight, unemotional and unchanging. Instead it is the locals who undergo transformation and the process of self- discovery, which is central to the film.
