Learning intentions: to examine how discourse analysis can reveal the organizing frame through which gender relations and identities in the community are constructed and represented. Feminist post-structural discourse analysis is used to explore gendered images embedded in the chatelaine article. Use of the image of frontier masculinity and "male spaces. " Fort mcmurray is presented as similar to an old frontier klondike boom town, though extracting oil is a lot more complicated than panning for gold. Fort mcmurray is described as "a bachelor pad of a city, functional and grey and fusty, like a bare-walled room with an unmade bed. " Abutting the narrative of the land of opportunity is the narrative of despoliation. "everyone from the hookers on down isn"t from here and doesn"t want to be from here. Like the oil companies and the escorts, they"re just here to exploit a well-spring to their advantage, screw around a bit and leave. "
