Anvoa is useful for studying the relationship between a continuous re- sponse and one (or more) factor variables. We will now study the rela- tionship between two continuous variables. Example: several of a particular species of sh are grown from eggs in tanks set at particular temperatures. We wish to examine how y, the length of the sh (in mm) depends on x, the temperature of the tank (in degrees celsius). y 3900 4205 4100 4300 4540 5100 5450 5140. For a xed value of x, the individual values of y can vary (depending on food received, the genetic makeup of that particular sh, etc. ). We can imagine that for every x value, there is a population of y values; it makes sense then to study the relationship between x, and the mean of the y values at that value of x. Notation: y |x is the mean of the y values at a particular x value.
