Spices: some history of old world spices, examples. Often talk about herbs and spices for flavourings. We are interested in flavour they provided: tends to come from essential oils, come from terpenes. Terpenes when talking about herbs and spices. Production of sugars: sugar is a primary metabolite, one of the essential things that plants have to produce, cannot get away without producing some sort of sugars. All other things, if it were not produced: would not prevent it from being able to live, would affect ability somewhere in its ability of being able to reproduce. Plant parts: herbs- usually aromatic leaves (or seeds, spices- aromatic fruits, flowers, bark, or other. When looking at herbs, we are usually talking about aromatic leaves or even seeds. When looking at spices, tend to be looking at fruit, flowers, bark, or some other part: pepper is a fruit, cinnamon is bark, cloves- flower bud.
