The politics of representation is tied inherently to ideology. Hottentot vensus was actually a woman named sarah bartman who was taken from south africa. Theme to think about: how the idea of female empowerment has been coopted to be all about sexual empowerment. We learn what it means to be masculine and feminine in a social context. We define masculine and feminine together, once doesn"t make sense without the other. When we say that gender is constructed we only look to other cultures to confirm this. In other cultures men do things normally that we associate with the feminine in our culture (doing hair, nurture children) and they parade in front of woman. Therefore gender is constructed in a very specific time and place because it is opposite here. Ideas of masculinity and femininity are deeply inscribed in our popular culture, and they have typically worked to reinforce the ideal of masculine dominance and female subordination.
