CMAF 3020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Binary Opposition, Visible Minority, White Trash
Document Summary
***stuart hall outlines 3 different theories of representation: reflexive, construction theory, instructive. These representations shape these broader realities, in other words our sign systems do not simply reflect preexisting reality they actually act to construct our perception of what is reality . Representation is the production of the meaning of concepts in our minds through language, it is the link between concepts and language. It allows us to refer to the real world or the fictional world. Two systems of representation: shared cultural codes - is the system of which people are correlated, they are conceptual maps. Ex: if you see a picture of a white picket fence you think of a well off family in the suburbs. If meaning is the result of our social cultural and linguistic conventions than meaning itself can never be fixed. Sometimes words and symbols come to mean different things over time or in different contexts.
