ESCI 2010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Coastal Erosion, Surf Zone, Hydraulic Action
Document Summary
Erosion concentrated where wave action hit a part of the cliff affected by the fault. Upheaval resulting in major tilting or folding of the rocks. Key factor is that they show a steep inclination towards the water edge. Hazardous conditions along a marine shoreline exist because it is the common boundary of some of the spheres of earth: atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, interactions of these spheres can cause hazards. Because it is a common boundary of the spheres, landscapes of such a boundary are subject to abrupt changes. There are things like tropical cyclones, hurricanes that have impact on ocean surface and bring disruption to coastal regions. Tropical cyclones have the effect of emphasizing these erosion and deposition processes: make them more severe. There is the phenomenon known as tsunami: disturbances of oceanic water column that bring disturbances to the shoreline and result from earth quakes, change in submarine topography brought about by earthquake, can result in coastal erosion.
