SOSC 2500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Standard Score, Standard Deviation, Normal Distribution
Document Summary
Standardized normal curve - also called the standardized normal distribution. 32 (31. 73)% of scores are more than 1sd from the mean (68. 27%) 5 (4. 55)% of scores are more than 2sd from the mean (95. 45%) 1 (0. 27)% of scores are more than 3sd from the mean (99. 73%) To understand, you can use the rounded numbers; to do the calculations, you need the decimal numbers. 1-2-3 rule is useful because you can use it regardless of the underlying scale of measurement; you know what percentage of scores will fall btwn or beyond certain por- tions of the curve. Standardized means that it is on a scale that has a common meaning and therefore: We know what that information means because the normal curve is standardized. When something is standardized we can use it as a basis or model for compari- son. Convert the raw scores for two (or more) variables into values on the normal curve and then can directly compare them.
