PHIL 1600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Public Reason, Chrysler Hall, Vegetarianism
Document Summary
Based, at least in part, on public reasons . A public reason is a reason for you that could be a reason for someone else. Private reason: i don"t like the taste of meat so i don"t eat it. Public reason: i don"t eat meat because of the horrible cruelty involved in factory farming. Identifying an issue: not simply a topic, e. g. , vegetarianism, war, poverty, not a thesis: e. g. , people should not eat meat , should be in the form of a question, e. g. , What is the extent of poverty in the u. s. ? : what should be done about poverty in our state? , should i get a tattoo? . Reasoned judgment: seeking and evaluating relevant arguments, identifying and avoiding fallacious arguments, identifying bias: yours and others", using appropriate criteria, weighing pros and cons. Criteria identify the relevant considerations and provide the basis for making a judgment.
