Research on the brain and its role in psychopathology. Brain can be affected profoundly, with drastic changes. New research is showing more treatment, showing more optimistic prognosis in those with neurocognitive disor- ders. Disorders that affect cognitive processes like learning, memory and consciousness. Most neurocog disorders develop later in life. 2 classes: delirium and mild or major neurocog disorder. Signifies predominant feature is impairment of cognitive abilities like memory, attention, perception, think- ing. Vs. not primary in order disorders (ex schizophrenia, depression) But cognitive impairment is primary in intellectual disability and specific lds. Dsm5 - term neurocognitive disorders as category for dementia and amnestic disorders, with major and minor subtypes. Incidence of disability due to cognitive fns rises with age. As life expectancy increases, cog disorders become more prevalent. General view is more positive with recent advances: contrary to earlier understanding, evidence indicates brain cells can regenerate (even in an aging brain)
