PSYC 3300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Existence Precedes Essence, Personal Development, Scientific Method
Document Summary
The third wave, or great psychology movement. Personal responsibility: you are ultimately what you make of yourself. Here and now: you cannot really look forward to something, because something could happen to you. Looking back on your past isn"t as vital as it is to look at today, because today is really all you have. Phenomenology of individual: the lonely person at the party that feels like no one likes him/her is right. The way you see the world is the world. Personal growth: something is urging you to become more than what you are. Revision of contemporary psychology: contemporary psychology is centered on reinforcement, motivation, intelligence. Humanists state that we are thinking, sentient beings, not animals. Psychology and natural science: being scientific simply means something uses the scientific method. Humanists were told to change their questions, because they weren"t scientific. this is why it took so long to study things like love.
