As humans, we can think about thinking; metacognition; unique feature. Sleep and the brain - dolphins sleep with one eye open; half the brain is awake to protect itself from predators, go up for air. We have many cycles that go on daily; hormone fluctuations, happiness levels (monday-thru the week) One of the most fundamental cycles is sleep - cannot go more than a few days disrupting it. We"re designed to sleep at night, work during the day; people with night shifts can be severely compro- mised. People (<1% with dec2 mutation) - 6 hours or less. Insomnia (15% of people): difficulty falling and staying asleep: can have trouble falling asleep (more than 30 minutes), waking up too early regularly, or waking up dur- ing the night and having trouble returning to sleep. 4/29/16: neurotransmitter dopamine deficiency with rem behaviour disorder; stops you from acting out your dreams; sleep paralysis.
