Two scales: social readjustment rating scale and the hassles scale try to gauge the nature and impact of differing stressful events. Major life events: david holmes developed srrs questionnaire based on life events ranked in terms of their stressfulness as rated by participants. May measure how we adapt to changing circumstances. Measures stressors doesn"t consider other crucial factors; not a perfect predictor of who will become physically or psychologically ill. Hassles: minor annoyance or nuisance that strains our ability to cope. Hassles scale measures how stressful events affect our adjustment. Frequency and perceived severity are better predictors of physical health, depression and anxiety than big life events ^^ Hans selye recognized a connection btwn the stress response of animals (stomach ulcers, increases in the size of the adrenal gland) and that of physically ill patients who showed a pattern of stress-related responses.
