Psychotherapy: a psychological intervention designed to help people resolve emotional, behavioural and interpersonal problems and improve the quality of their lives. Clients who are better adjusted to begin with realize that they may be contributing to their own problems. Clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, counselling psychologist (treats less severe problems), school psychologist, clinical social worker, mental health counsellor. Paraprofessionals: person with no professional training who provides mental health services; often provide services in such settings as crisis intervention centres and other social service agencies. People who fulfill the role of therapist may provide clients with hope, empathy, advice, support and opportunities for new learning experiences. Advantages to consulting with a professional: understands how to operate effective within the mental health system, appreciates complex ethical, professional and personal issues, and can select treatments of demonstrated effectiveness. Warm, direct, respectful, engaged,establishes a positive working relationship with clients.
