PSYC 2230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cytosine, Guanine, Thymine
Document Summary
Consider the resolution of television when pondering genetics: it was only recently that we were able to see television in flawless hd quality. Prior to hd tv, our view of events on tv were limited. In much the same way, genetics have only recently become more understood with the introduction of the human genome (which is analogous to hd tv). It"s both something within the person and the environment. Inside the nucleus of every cell, there exists an identical set of chromosomes (very long string of dna) that comes in segmented packets. 23 chromosomes from mom, 23 chromosomes from dad. The purpose of a gene is to produce proteins. The gene uses the instructions provided by chromosomes to produce these proteins. For the longest time, we had an idea about the functionality of genes, but it was not until the human genome was presented that genetics became more widely understood.
