PSYC 2230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Moro Reflex, Primitive Reflexes, Lactiferous Duct
Document Summary
Most of the movements a baby performs are involuntary. Eye-blink reflex, pupil narrowing are carried into adulthood. Lower cortical areas regulate many basic reflexes. Reflexes that disappear after a year of life. Presence of these reflexes later on are cause for concern. These reflexes are good indicators of proper neurological development. Moro reflex: a loud noise causes infant to throw his or arms and arch back. Babinski: touching infant"s toes causes the toes to fan out. Gallant reflex: rubbing finger along spine results in the flexing of that side of the body. Babkin: putting pressure on both palms at the same time causes the tongue to stick out. On average, babies sleep 16-18 hours a day (90% of the time) Mother walking around while child is in vitro causes a rocking sensation due to movement of amniotic fluid. When child is born, this sleep pattern reverses (no amniotic fluid to rock child anymore).
