Goal of personality psychology is to construct a scientifically credible account of human personality. Dispositional traits: the big five personality traits (ocean, canoe acronyms) Openness to experience, consciousness, extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism. Freud and erikson describe these motivations and life crises . Easy, difficult, or slow to warm-up categories based on interviews. Easy: positive mood, open, adaptable to new situations (40% of general population) Difficult: (about 10% of population) not active, irritable, withdraw from new situations, low attention span, high intensity of emotion. Slow to warm-up: likely to resemble easy kids, but takes time to get there. Slow to approach new situations, sometimes a bit moody. 35% of children are not classifiable, most likely due to cultural differences. There is some variation in temperament by culture. Chinese 4 month old and irish 4 month old babies vary in activity (chinese babies were less irritable and less active) In canada and the us, shy/reserved children are at a social disadvantage.
