Idealists and rationalists: plato and descartes; some knowledge is inborn (nature argument) Empiricists: john locke thought that the mind was a blank slate at birth (tabula rasa); all experience comes from experience (nurture argument) Interactionists: development is a combination of nature and nurture; concept of original sin from christianity that humans are born with a selfish nature and need to be reborn. Continuity vs. discontinuity issue *** on test and many people screw this up because they think they know it better than they actually do. Discontinuity: qualitative change is emphasized and measured; stages of development; change in kind or types. Freud and erikson both rely heavily on child"s interactions with others that are close to them.
