Abnormal psychology: the scientific study of abnormal thoughts, feelings, and behaviour for the purpose of describing, predicting, explaining, and changing these patterns. Deviance: anything that strays from the norm (excessive drinking daily) Homosexuality used to be classified as sociopathic personality in the dsm: it has since been removed. Distress: behaviours must cause distress before they can be labeled as abnormal. In ocd, obsessions/compulsions must impair one"s functioning to be abnormal. Exceptions would be conduct disorder, where an individual isn"t distressed after setting a house on fire. Anorexia results in low body weight and resulting complications. Intermittent explosive disorder: taking things to an extreme. Szasz believes mental illness is a myth used to change people so they fit societal norms. Demonology: removal of evil spirits in abnormal individuals. Trephination: cutting out circular portions of skull. Exorcism: performance of rituals to make body an undesirable place to reside (starvation, drinking bitter liquid, etc. ) Hippocrates believed all illnesses had natural causes.
