Prognosis: up to 80% achieve remission ten years ater iniial treatment; maybe because of changes in neurobiology or changes in life circumstances. Childhood trauma (expecially sexual abuse and physical abuse) Causal or predisposing? probably geneic vulnerabiliies to volaility, impulsivity and mood instability. Predisposiion --> stressful triggering event --> characterisic unstable behaviours. 20-40% of paients with bpd have no apparent history of abuse (not necessary or suicient to explain) Diicult client group (drug abuse, compliance with treatment) Support for pharmacotherapy (tricyclic anidepressants, lithium, atypical anipsychoics) Psychotherapy: dilecical behaviour therapy (dbt): individual and group work, mindfulness, distress tolerance, emoion regulaion, interpersonal skills, learning to cope more eiciently (trauma), signiicant efects (suicide atempts, self-harm, treatment dropout, hospitalizaions, anger, social adjustment, mood disorders. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder-did not cover in class but told us it would be on exam.
