Document Summary

Strongest contribution to etiology is sociocultural rather than psychological or biological factors. Larger increase in death rates (6x) than in normal population. Not recognized as disorders until relatively recently. Used to be more popular in western countries, but becoming more widespread. Recurrent episodes of binge eating: eating an amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would eat during a similar period of time and under similar circumstances, lack of control over eating during the episode. Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviours to prevent weight gain, such as vomiting, misuse of laxatives, fasting or excessive exercise. Binge eating and compensatory behaviours occur at least once a week for 3 months. Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight. Disturbance doesn"t occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia nervosa. Both amount of food and feeling of lack of control are experienced.
