Most childhood disorders involve breakdowns in normal development. Evaluation of ability to cope with live events, appraisal of events, cognitive abilities, and personality, support from parents and peers. Case: felicia: difficulty coping with demands of adolescence, developing autonomy from parents, getting along with peers, managing academically, establishing a self-identity, regulating her emotions, coping with stress related to mother"s hospitalization. Form the basis of a flexible and ongoing process of hypothesis testing: goal of clinical assessment is to achieve effective solutions to problems, and to promote and en- hance well-being. Meaningful to the extent that they result in practical and effective interventions: idiographic case formation: obtaining a detailed understanding of the individual as a unique entity, nomothetic formulation: emphasizes broad general inferences that apply to large groups. Nomothetic knowledge about principles of assessment, normal and abnormal child development and specific disorders results in better hypotheses to test at the idiographic (individual) level.
