Can learn, as intelligent as anyone else. Disorders affect limited aspects of learning - won"t impair normal life, but are stressful. Initially, attributed to poor motivation or poor instruction. Ld: learning problems that occur in absence of other obvious conditions like id or brain damage. Average or above average intelligence - but despite this, have problems taking in, retaining or express- ing info; often invisible. Failing to perform at their expected level at school - what they all share. Lay term (not diagnostic) - significant problems in mastering one or more of: listening, speaking, read- ing, writing, reasoning, math. Specific learning disorder: problems in learning and using academic skills: dx primarily early in school. Can go undetected despite difficulties with (i) reading, writing, math and (ii) daily routines, family life, and friendships. Normal intellectual processes in most areas but weaker in others, aka unexpected discrepancy btwn measured ability and actual performance.
