Could not walk until he was 4 years old, afraid to sleep due to excess phlegm, contracted pneumonia after his brother died of the same illness, run over by two streetcars. Very early, adler is clearly not the healthiest child. Adler was afraid of graveyards, so he walked back and forth past the graveyard to conquer his fear. He failed math, but decided to do better, and eventually excelled. He was determined to champion his difficulties. He wanted to champion death by sustaining life: he studied to be a medical doctor. Met freud in 1902 and became president of the psychoanalytic society in 1910, and later defected in 1911 due to disagreement with freud. Adler believed freud was too fixated on the unconscious and later headed in the complete opposite direction to influence the existentialists and humanists. Concept of lifestyle came from alfred adler. Adler realized that people are unique: this was influential to trait theorists.
