In recent years, there"s been an emphasis on cultural diversity: in 2011, 22% of total canadian population were first generation immigrants representative of around 200 countries; 17. 4% total population were second generation. People who might seek the services represent a growing variety of cultural backgrounds. Multiculturalism is a defining issue of the current era of psychology. Fourth force; represents a change in emphasis that enhances and strengthens existing models by infusing them with sensitivity and awareness: before: psychoanalysis, behaviourism, and humanism/person-centred, cultural competence does not replace these; superordinate. Lillian comas-diaz video: elephant in the room; can"t ignore it - need to ask about cultural values, check your ego at the door - you can"t know everything, that"s ok. We must incorporate cultural acknowledgement into our theories and into our therapies, so that clients not of the dominant culture own"t have to feel lost, displaced or mystified.
