Clinical psychologists have worked w children since the inception of the field: first clinic (late 1800s) was designed specifically for children. Clinical child psych now a popular specialty. Pediatric psychology: subspecialty focusing on mental and physical health of children with medical conditions. Some children develop psychological problems while others don"t, even in similar settings: vulnerability vs. resilience. Poverty, emotional conflict among parents, poor schooling: parental factors. Poor parental physical or mental health, low iq, hypercritical tendencies: child factors. Medical problems, difficult temperament, low iq, social skills deficits. Grotbert"s resiliency categories: external supports: i have. Parental support, stable family/community, access to resources. Self-esteem: interpersonal and problem-solving skills: i can. Treatment may aim to enhance these factors: make child more resilient to stressors. Must consider: presenting problem, developmental stage, parents/family, environment. Get info from different parties: multimethod. Different methods of data collection: multisetting. Interviews: both child and relevant adults, parents may feel they"re being blamed for child"s problem.
