Being able to put yourself in position of the other person (taking perspective of another person) Relate to and feel to what another person if feeling (understanding how a person it feeling) Empathy definition: emotional state that matches another person"s emotional state: related to emergence of morality: kids who are empathic early on and are tracked over time, they have morality. 12-24 months: will try to comfort another person who is upset (18 months, approach/offer to help) 2-3 years: tries various methods to comfort others. 3-4 years: shows increased ability to respond to the feelings of others by comforting. 4-6 years: capable of concern for future welfare of others. Birth-12 months: cries when other people cry (especially babies) Mid-late childhood: respond to a person"s general condition. Adolescence: respond to difficulties experienced by groups of people.
