SWRK 2040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Communism, Social Democracy, Planned Economy
Document Summary
Social democracy is a paradigm grounded in socialist political and economic thought. There are many misconceptions about socialism"s true meanings and consequences. Many of these misconceptions stem from the experiences of some communist countries and their perceived failures with socialism [i. e. the former u. s. s. r. (union of soviet socialist republics)] There are multiple schools of socialist thought and there are disagreements among them. Social democracy is but one of the many forms of socialism. The u. s. a. is the only western democracy without a socialist political party at the national level; perception that socialism is anti-democractic. Canada has a national socialist party (new democratic party ndp ), and socialist governments have been democratically elected in many parts of the world. Let us always remember the founding principle of our [social democratic] party, which is how we look after each other, not how we look after ourselves.
