Saga (norse) - oral story of person/family (ie icelandic sagas) Epic = 1 particular presentation of the story: long poem addressed to muses, hexameter meter. Heroes sagas: quest stories, re ecting folk tale elements. Though athena, hermes get insignia from perseus. Existence of greek gods = metaphysical question. Existence of greek heroes = historical question. Probably some existed, but cannot really tell. Greeks have their own traditions, but hard to know for sure. Involved in historical times, usually happened later. Happened in earlier times, harder to tell. Pre-trojan war generation: heracles, argonauts, theseus oedipus. Generation of trojan war: priam, agamemnon, achilles. Greeks think that after the trojan war, the mythic period ends. Hears that son of danae will kill him. Child (perseus) kept secret for 4 years. Perseus and danae put to sea in a box. Found by sherman - brother of the king. Requests gift of a horse from banquet guests. Perseus boasts: he can bring gorgon"s head.
