Identity creates many issues within conflicts. So trying to dissect these ideals and how and
why people feel so strongly about these factors will help us understand conflicts and how to
approach the solutions; There are many theories of identity however Rothman and Alberstein
popularized three levels:Individual, group and or collective as well as an intergroup level
[Some of these levels are directly related to one another]. This tiered way of thinking about
identities has brought us to other theories such as…
!
1. !
A) Trans-generational Trauma and Chosen glories:!
This scholar says whenever a group feels marginalized whenever it feels like its rights are not
granted to it, it starts a mobilization of fables of history of certain groups. These “Chosen
Glories” can fuel pride and egos, which are transmitted from generation to generation. They
are prominent in all minorities and “groups of identity” yet some of the more prominent
examples one can find today are: White Supremacists, Nationalist Serbs, Hindulva and
Islamists.!
B) Trans-generational Trauma and Chosen Traumas:!
Members of the group, generation to generation pass on these stories of being victims for a
significant time within history. You create misery, anger and range as well as stories that are
negative. There is an us against them attitude which creates a destructive storytelling to
magnify their feelings of alienation.!
!
!
2. Social Cubism:
There are some common factors that fuel Ethnopolitical conflicts. They are: Economic,
Religion, Political, Psychocultural, History demographic factors. While injustices are projected
upon certain groups, these are based in objectivism; one can feel they are being oppressed
when in reality they are not being oppressed. !
!
3. Three Pillar Framework: !
Conflict can be analyzed using three pillars: !
! A. the latent or pre-conflict pillar which embodies the need to identify the parties
within the conflicts, whether or not it is conflict which is intra-pyschic or intra-actor, as well as
the objectives of these parties, one how these parties deal with conflict. [Not always two
partners and not always binary, there are overlaps. There are indigenous groups, other
countries and a wide range of other factors that change the political powers.] !
!B. Conditions and causes pillar which underlies the reasons for why the extremes
have occurred. Through here, we continue our need to identify the parties within the conflicts
yet it extends more broadly to cover societal and international conditions as well. This can
lead to a theory being created on whether or not an invention should occur. Scholars
commonly use a system of “Cross type and cross level commonalities” to build this theory.
