PSYC-1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Mary Ainsworth, Childhood Amnesia
Document Summary
Walking independently - 15 months: maturation takes place in the body and cerebellum, physical training generally cannot change the timing. Infant at work: babies at only 3 months old can learn that kicking moves a mobile, and they can retain that learning for a month, infants are capable of learning and remembering, infantile amnesia may reflect conscious memory. Stranger anxiety: stranger anxiety develops around ages 9 to 13 months, in this stage, a child notices and fears new people. How does this develop: as children develop schemas for the primary people in their lives, they are more able to notice when strangers do not fit those schemas. However, they do not yet have the ability to assimilate those faces: we may have evolved to resist assimilated new faces. Family: most creatures tend to attach to caregivers who have become familiar, birds have a critical period hours after hatching, during which they might imprint.
