Language functions: communication connects humans; enhances mind-reading, facilitates complex memory storage, enables thinking, transmission of knowledge through generations, which allows cultural progress, and all civilization. A system that combines meaningless elements such as sounds, signs, and gestures, to form structured utterances that convey meaning, which include concepts, quantities, plans, identity, feelings, ides, facts, and customs. Language and the mind: 7000 languages, with unique dictionaries of word meanings, all earthling languages translatable one to another, reflecting a universal human mental psychology. Genes: nature: we are born with specific brain structures for: Nurture: but the brain structures wont work if there has been an inadequate language. Producing language environment: you need a lot of language experience, especially when you are young, then language acquision is automatic. Brain activiy when speaking and hearing words: broca"s area (frontal lobe -- just in front of motor strip, wernicke"s area (between temporal lobe and rest of cerebrum)
