We can only do one thing at a time - aside from certain multitasking. Charles babbage displayed an extraordinary elaborate image of jacquard that was created by jacquard"s look and 24,000 punch cards, one for each row! Each punch card works independently from one another and controlled a small part of the overall pattern - there was no single component which stores a master plan - no interaction or whatever. The complexity in the overall design owes not to the complexity of the loom or any individual punch card, but rather the sheer number of punch cards required. As we saw earlier, in nite variety can arise from a nite set of symbols provided that the symbol system allows for recursive operations.
