Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Buffy Coat, Blood Plasma, Anticoagulant
Document Summary
Blood is what type of tissue: epithelial, nervous, connective, muscle, none of the above. Plasma vs. formed element: anything you see under a microscope is a formed element. If you are isolating antibodies, you collect the serum to get the antibodies out of blood. Ratio of plasma to rbc is used to determine the health of the connective tissue = hematocrit: 45% rbc, lower in woman than it is in men, varies depending on health + age, 55% plasma. Buffy coat: platelets, leukocytes (wbc), agranulocytes nucleated cells with no granules, granulocytes nucleated cells that do have granules, lymphocyte, monocyte, neutrophil, basophil, eosinophil. It is the work of the platelets: when platelets are activated, they go into a contractile state. They pull the clot to make it tighter can close a wound to some extent. Not that efficient but works to a certain extent.
