Biology 2382B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Socalled, Eyepiece, Vacuole
Document Summary
He was known to build many simple, single lens microscopes. Using these he was the first to observe living protozoa and bacteria which he named animalcules . He later went on to visualize human red blood cells and sperm. With great skill at grinding lens, possessing naturally acute eyesight and lots of patience he was able to achieve the magnification of 200x. It consists of a light source, a condenser lens to focus light on specimen, an objective lens to collect light after it has passed through specimen and an ocular or eyepiece lens to focus image into eye. Typical light microscope magnification is 40 1000x. Only structures in the cell with a high refractive index (ability to bend light) are observable. Their ability to bend light makes certain areas look darker and helps to distinguish different things in the cell. Note that this is a multiple lens microscope.
