Biology 1001A Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Zebroid, Meiosis, Mendelian Inheritance
Document Summary
Cnv"s are very common and happen all the time. Zygotes bring dna from 2 parents into the same cell. Meiosis generates diversity in several ways : recombination during prophase: during synapsis (prophase i), chromosomes pair up & cross over, independent assortment: at metaphase i, chromosomes line up by chance (random). We don"t know which chromosome is going to the top/bottom pole. Ability for chromosomes to line up independently of each other is a strong generator of diversity: in meiosis ii, replicated chromosomes align independently: recombinant chromatids may or may not line up with another recombinant chromatid, it"s just random. As chromosomes line up, which chromatids go up and which goes down is another source of diversity: random combination of gametes is another source of diversity. Idea random segregation in meiosis i and ii are important: does not mean equally likely everywhere, it just means unpredictable. Spores divide by mitosis to make gametophytes, gametophytes then makes gametes to fertilize zygotes.
