Document Summary

At the same time, our ability to detect new species is increasing. New species discovered each year, 18000 new species discovered each year. What does it mean to be a distinct species, rather than a population?? (mentioned later on in the course) A huge proportion of the world"s biodiversity has not even been discovered. The idea that all life on earth is related to everything else. This idea of universal common descent upsets people. People hate this idea, they don"t hate the idea of natural selection & genetic drift etc. Traits we have in common with every other life on planet (genetic code, arrangement of molecule cell membranes) We share these common traits b/c we inherited them from the same ancestor. There are small traits that only some organisms (sister groups) share. Ex: fungi and bacteria share some traits that we don"t have.
