Document Summary

We can think of the earth as a photoreceptor. Virtually everything in the biosphere relies directly or indirectly on the ability of xing carbon dioxide to sugar for energy. The de nition of photosynthesis is the light dependent conversion of carbon dioxide to carbohydrate. Photosynthesis is endergonic and also endothermic (entropy is going down, 6 co2 to 1 sugar), it is driven by light which is energetic. 6 co2 + 6 h20 > c6h12o6 + 6 o2. Carbon dioxide is reduced to the 6 carbon sugar. There is nothing uniquely eukaryotic about photosynthesis, it evolved before the eukaryotic cell developed. Thylakoid membranes are internal membranes within the chloroplast membrane. The thylakoids house the photosystems - pigment is only found only in the photosystems in the thylakoids. Thylakoids are like bags which de ne another internal compartment called the thylakoid lumen. The stroma is the aqueous part of the chloroplast, where the calvin cycle takes place.
