Document Summary

Life is driven by energy, but we can only detect it through work. Energy is the capacity to do work. Energy can exist as: heat, chemical, electrical, mechanical, electromagnetic radiation, and more form to another: forms are different, but can be converted or transformed readily from one. Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by an object because it is in motion. The study of energy and its transformations is called thermodynamics: system: the object being studied, surroundings: everything outside the system, universe: total of the system and the surroundings. Types of systems: isolated: does not exchange matter or energy with the surroundings, closed: can exchange energy, but not matter with the surroundings, open: can exchange matter and energy with the surroundings. First law of thermodynamics: energy can be transformed but not created or destroyed, aka principle of conservation of energy. Second law of thermodynamics: energy transformations increase disorder, the randomness or disorder is called entropy.
