Document Summary

Electromagnetic radiation: comes from the sun in the form of wavelengths, we think of light in the terms of the wavelengths the human eye can perceive, in may ways, light behaves like a wave. It goes through space as a wave: it is made up of discrete particles of energy called a photon, packages of energy. Relationship between wavelength and energy: there is a relationship between wavelength and energy. The shorter the wavelength of light the more energy the photon at that wavelength would have. i. e. blue light has more energy than red light. Absorb light: channel rhodopsin absorbs light, proteins don"t absorb light, pigments do. Relationship between pigment and associated protein: pigments are bound to proteins in a pigment-protein complex, gel electrophoresis, most proteins in the body do not absorb visible light. Must stain them to see them: *if you want to use light as a source of information you have to absorb the photons of light.
