Hybridization - reproduction involving more than one species. Variation in reproductive patterns complicates the application of the species concept, as well as hybridization. Know that everything is organized into specific categories. First modern practicioner of taxonomy - science that identifies, names, and classifies new species. Binomial nomenclature: species are assigned a latinized two-part na me, species name or binomial. First part identifies a genus, group of species with similar characteristics. Species name is never capitalized, entire binomial is italicized or underlined when handwritten. Specific epithet is never used without the full or abbreviated generic name preceding it because the same species name is often given to species in different genera. Looking at visible traits of different organisms and noticing these designate what a species is. Paleobiologists use morphological criteria to identify the species of fossilized organisms .
