Depending on whether the environment is changing or not, sexual or asexual reproduction will be favored. Lottery ticket hypothesis: in most cases however, environments do change and the selective pressures that the offspring face end up being very different from those that parents faced. Red queen hypothesis: when the environment is continually evolving, sexual reproduction should be favored so that a species can keep up with the changing environment. The main long term advantages of sex are that it can purge harmful mutations, and combine helpful mutation, while short term advantages are that it can help a species evolve to a quickly changing environment.
